Purpose
The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) is a global member organisation that works to strengthen Midwives’ Associations and thereby enhance the sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health (SRMNAH) of women, girls, gender-diverse people and their newborns.
To support this mission, ICM has an International Code of Ethics for Midwives, a foundational document which underpins the implementation of the ICM Professional Framework for Midwifery. The International Code of Ethics for Midwives has not been updated in over a decade. In that time, emerging research, technological advancements, and evolving social contexts have influenced the profession of midwifery.
To ensure that ICM, its member associations, and the profession remain aligned with current ethical standards and global contexts, ICM is updating the International Code of Ethics for Midwives. As part of this process, an expert working group will be convened to guide and undertake this work.
Membership
The expert working group will consist of up to 10 members, including an ICM midwife advisor, who will all meet virtually for 1.5 hours per meeting, up to six times between September 2025 and January 2026.
Requirements
To be eligible, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria
Be a midwifery ethicist
Have conducted (and preferably published) research on midwifery ethics
A member of midwifery ethics board, committee or group
Only in exceptional circumstances will non-midwives be considered.
Proficiency in English is necessary.
Membership selection will prioritise equitable representation from all ICM regions.
